Brussels born Dom Jean-Marie Struyven OCSO., entered the Cistercian Order at the Abbey of Scourmont, making his profession on January 27, 1929. Ordained priest on April 8, 1934, he was sent over to China as Superior of the Monastery of Our Lady of Consolation in Peiping, present day Beijing. Back to the Abbey of Scourmont following political unrest in the country, he passed unexpectedly away on March 19, 1959 while delivering a sermon to his brethren in honor of Saint Joseph on the occasion of his liturgical feast day.
