Born in Tianjin, China, 16 January.

1907

Started school at Drymen Village School, Scotland.

 

1908

Continued schooling at LMS School for Sons of Missionaries at Blackheath, England.

 

1912

School moved to Mottingham and renamed Eltham College.

1918

Captain of cricket and rugby teams.

1922

Won 100 and 220 sprints at Scottish AAA Championships.

1923

Raced at British AAA Championships at Stamford Bridge, the Triangular International Contest at Stoke-on-Trent, and in USA.

1924

Triple victory at Hampden Park, Glasgow, in Scottish AAA Championships.

Won quarter mile at British AAA Championships in London. Olympic Games in Paris - bronze medal in 200 metres and gold medal in 400 metres.

Graduation from Edinburgh University.

1924-25

Student evangelistic campaigns.

 

1925

Won 100, 220, 440 in his last races at Scottish AAA Championships before leaving for China with LMS. Farewell from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Teaching at Anglo-Chinese Christian College in Tianjin, China.

1928

Won 200 and 400 at Darien in Manchuria.

1929

Raced in Tianjin against Dr. Otto Peltzer, holder of 500 metres world record, and won the 400 metres.

1930

Engagement to Florence Mackenzie.

1931

Home to Scotland for first furlough and meetings.

1932

Ordained to the ministry of the Scottish Congregational Church.

1933

Visited Florence in Toronto en-route to China to continue teaching at Anglo-Chinese Christian College.

Took charge of Sports and Religious Activities at the College.

1934

Married to Florence Jean Mackenzie in Union Church, Tianjin, on March 27.

1935-36

Giving some help in country work inland.

 

1937

Transferred to Xiaochang. Japan invades China.

1938

Served as Acting-Superintendent of hospital. Busy in rural evangelism.

1939

Returned to Scotland via Canada for second furlough.

1940

Florence and the girls travel to Scotland. Six months later the whole family returns to China via Canada.

1941

Florence and children are evacuated from China to Canada. All LMS missionaries called from Inland to the coast to Tianjin. Japan bombs the American fleet at Pearl Harbour, December 7.

1942

Under house arrest in Tianjin.

1943-44

Taken captive by Japanese soldiers and imprisoned at Weihsien Internment Camp on March 30.

Carried many responsibilities in the prison camp - teacher, chairman of athletics activities, warden of Block 23 and 24, preacher, member of the Discipline Committee, friend and helper of all.

 

1945

Became ill with severe headaches, died February 21.
